Strong start for Rebels
REIGNING premiers Heytesbury Rebels got its 2022-23 season campaign off to a strong start with victory over Camperdown in South West Cricket last weekend.
REIGNING premiers Heytesbury Rebels got its 2022-23 season campaign off to a strong start with victory over Camperdown in South West Cricket last weekend.
Winning the toss, the Rebels sent Camperdown in to bat and thanks to some effective bowling from the likes of Nick Harding (2/19) and Tom Hunt (2/23) had them all out for 117.
The Rebels maintained their early momentum at the crease, with coach Simon Harkness managing 64, well supported by Tom Hunt not out on 35 to have the Rebels declare at 1/118.
“After four wash-outs it was great to finally get out there and get the first one (win) on the board,” Harkness said.
“Not everyone loves training and to be doing it week after week and not being able to actually play a game, that’s pretty tough.
“In that type of scenario it can be challenging to keep everyone motivated and to keep team morale up; but we managed and the boys were able pumped to get the first game going. We’re keen to keep that momentum but who knows what the weather and future rounds have in store; time will tell I guess.”
In what Harkness said was a “great team effort” he also praised the efforts of the Mottram brothers (Blake and Ryan) and all-rounder Nicholas Harding for their on-field efforts.
“Henry Stansfield was another one who stood out on the weekend; he’s a young bloke who came to us from Nirranda this season. He’s a keen wicket keeper and he really did well all day. He’ll be another great asset to our side.”
In division two last weekend, the Rebels took on Pomborneit but fell short, finishing on 120 while Pombo declared at 8/171.
R. Jones on 22 and R. Parsons 21 were the better batters for the Rebels while Z. Lenehan 3/20, T. Illingworth 2/39 and R. Jones 1.17 were the best of the bowlers.
Division three was all out for 67 in its loss to Simpson (1/72). T. Thorburn 13 and P. Thompson 12 were the best with the bat while K.Parsons 1/28 was the best with the ball.
This weekend the Rebels’ division one side will take on Woorndoo at Timboon (weather permitting).
