MERCY Regional College VCE Chemistry students took a trip to the University of Melbourne to participate in a laboratory workshop and tour the university grounds recently.

The group enjoyed a tour of the chemistry building and explored some of the innovative research currently underway, including a giant super magnet.

The students learned about future jobs in the chemistry industry and looked at the role of many types of scientists such as forensic, medicinal, nanotechnology, environmental and even ice-cream scientists.

VCE chemistry teacher Jacqui Hester said the best experience of the program was using advanced equipment, technologies, and laboratory instruments and learning from students currently studying at the university.

“The participants gained a first-hand experience of what being a chemistry student at university may look like,” she said.
