Students sizzle for a cause
A SCHOOL initiative combining business studies, practical learning and support for charity made a weekend trip to Mitre 10 all the better.
Mercy Regional College Year Eight students Sienna and Charlie, along with the support of Charlie’s mother Adelle, hosted a sausage sizzle outside the Terang Mitre 10 on Saturday in support of a good cause.
The duo sold sausages along with cans of soft drink and bottled water in the name of raising funds for brain cancer research.
Charlie said the sale not only assists a great cause, but gave the students valuable experience which will inform later businesses studies.
“There’s a class in our school called PBL (project-based learning), so what we’re doing is a fundraiser and then a business later on in the year,” he said.
“That business is going to support cancer research.”
Sienna said she and Charlie had come up with the idea, which took on extra meaning as cancer impacts so many people in the community.
“We had to think this up ourselves, from making a business through to finding where to set up, what kind of profit we could earn and what we would have to put into it,” she said.
“It feels good knowing it’s going to a good cause.
“I know a few of my friends have parents or relatives who have cancer.
“One of my friends, their mum has brain cancer.
“It’s nice to know we’re doing something that can help.”
Charlie said the initiative got off to a strong start thanks to the generosity of Leehane’s Country Meats owner Zac Leehane.
“Thanks to Zac from Leehane’s Country Meats for donating 150 free sausages for this sausage sizzle,” he said.
“It is a big help towards our fundraiser, so we want to give them a huge thank you for that.”
