Successful resuscitation inspires funding
A PUSH for more training follow-ing the successful resuscitation of a man who went into cardiac arrest at last year’s Noorat Show is among the initiatives sharing in funding under the latest round of Corangamite Shire Council’s Business Assistance Scheme (BAS).
The funding allocation, totalling $2695 and a planning permit fee waiver of $226.50, were approved by councillors at last week’s Ordinary Meeting of Council.
The Western Victorian Axemen’s Association received $1100 under stream three – community enterprise projects – to go towards first aid training and accreditation to support safer local events.
Western Victoria Axemen’s Association president Scott Anderson said it was fantastic to receive such a showing of support from council.
“We applied for a defibrillator several years ago, which we were lucky enough to get so we could have with us at all of our working bees for us or anyone else in the public who needed it,” he said.
“Unfortunately, we had to use it on one of our competitors who went into cardiac arrest at the Noorat Show, but we fortunately had a successful outcome.
“That was then that we needed to train up as many people as possible so anyone could be available to help in a similar scenario.
“Our secretary (David Roberts) has successfully applied for this grant, which is great because anyone who isn’t already qualified in their first aid or CPR will be accredited in the near future.
“It’s good to be able to build on that because it’s something, as a club, we took away and looked at a few things we could handle better to lessen the time between an emergency response to any of these events if they occur.”
D.C Gilbert and P.J Gilbert, trading as Gilbo’s Café and Takeaway in Terang, received $1595 and a fee waiver of $226.50 for new business identification signage under stream one – business façade improvement.
Councillor Ruth Gstrein encouraged businesses to apply, with $16,724 remaining of the $50,000 budget allocation.
“The BAS scheme has been very successful and been taken up by a number of businesses and clubs operating throughout Corangamite Shire,” she said.
“I think it’s very timely that the Axemen’s Association are applying for first aid training – hopefully they don’t need to use it.
“It’s great to see businesses getting their facades upgraded.
