The full refurbishment of the kitchen and dining room was funded by a bequest from the estate of Graeme and Beverley Bant, as well as funds raised through the Sunnyside House Op Shop.

The upgrades included reflooring the dining area and updating furniture to improve safety for staff and residents.

Sunnyside House chief executive officer Jo Forrest said the Bain Marie, which was installed as part of the upgrades, was to promote greater dignity and choice for residents.

“The Bain Marie and meal selection process is in response to the Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards,” she said.

“There is a component about ensuring residents have the ability to have increased choice of their food.

“We’re moving away from preordering a meal, based on a menu residents are involved in creating, to residents being able to come into the dining room, look in the Bain Marie and select what they might like to eat based on the appearance of the food and the smells in the room.

“Everyone loves the dining room – it’s fresh, bright and everyone’s happy with that.

“The meal service process is very new to residents – they’re taking some time to adapt to it.”
