LOCAL students will have the opportunity to put their skills to the test on the national stage after winning regional awards last week.

The WorldSkills South West Region 2024 winners and place-getters were announced at an award ceremony at South West TAFE last Tuesday night, with winners from across the region taking out the titles.

Earlier in the month 50 students across commercial cookery, carpentry, automotive, beauty and hairdressing plied their skills in the WorldSkills South West Region competitions held at South West TAFE.

The winners now have the chance to compete at a national level with the Australian titles to be held on June 12-14, 2025 in Brisbane.

The regional award winners are:

Automotive:

  • Gold: Samuel Harrop-Redward, Timboon;

  • Silver: Marcus Flook, Warrnambool; and

  • Bronze: Harry Hinds, Allansford.

Beauty Therapy:

  • Gold: Maisie Rentsch, Warrnambool;

  • Silver: Taya Trigg, Bushfield; and

  • Bronze: Kaylee Bawden, Mortlake.

Carpentry:

  • Gold: Lachlan King, Woodford;

  • Silver, Hamish Kearney, Bulart; and

  • Bronze: Chester Wilder, Yulecart.

Cookery:

  • Gold: Chloe Graham, Warrnambool;

  • Silver: Kaden Bartlett, Timboon; and

  • Bronze: Geena Van Vugt.

Hairdressing:

  • Gold: Emily Huismann, Port Fairy;

  • Silver: Heidi Meade, Warrnambool; and

  • Bronze: Lisa Griffiths, Dennington.

VETIS Hairdressing:

  • Gold: Claire Bullock, Portland;

  • Silver: Chloe Vogels, Timboon; and

  • Bronze: Jade King, Port Fairy.

VETIS Makeup Services:

  • Gold: Amelia Ferguson, Portland;

  • Silver: Zemma Wright, Winslow; and

  • Bronze: Jules Morris, Ararat.

South West TAFE chief executive officer Mark Fidge said it was exciting to have the opportunity host this year’s competition.

“This is such a great opportunity for our students to test their skills against others in the industry and gain valuable experience,” he said.

“We want to make sure our students have the best possible training and this competition gives them the chance to enhance their skills and gain valuable feedback from industry experts.”
