Timboon celebrates 400 parkruns
TIMBOON parkrun celebrated a big milestone over the weekend, marking the occasion with a retro dress up theme.
On Saturday, June 13, Timboon held their 400th parkrun, encouraging attendees to get their retro on and dress up for their run or walk.
Cupcakes and balloons were part of the celebration, with participants eagerly reaching for a cupcake upon the completion of their run.
The Timboon parkrun has been taking place since 2017, which run director Darren Smith said was well attended regardless of the time of year.
“It’s really good – in winter time we have roughly between 20 and 40 show up and in summer we can have over 100,” he said.
“They come from far and wide.
“We get visitors from all over and we don’t know where they’ll be from until they turn up.
“It brings people together – people from different backgrounds all come to parkrun, from Warrnambool, Scotts Creek, Port Campbell, Peterborough and more.
“They’re all run directors so they all help, so many hands make light work.”
Mr Smith said the weekly event brought people together.
“A weekly event like this gives the meaning of togetherness,” he said.
“We’ve got some older gentlemen and ladies who will come out and do their walk and they’ll all go back to the Provedore, sit down and have a coffee together.
“It gives them something to talk about – they’re here each week without fail, they get amongst us and it brings people together.
“Little things make a big difference.”
Mr Smith said parkrun was the start to many people’s weekends, 400 weeks and counting.
“It gets people out of bed Saturday morning and gives them something to do,” he said.
“It gives them a start to the weekend, especially older people.
“People will come down at spot on 7.55am and they’ll stand in their little group and all walk down and walk back and it’s just really good.”
