Timboon bowler Geoff Bedggood stepped into the skipper’s position in his side’s 18 shot win over Warrnambool Blue on Saturday.

LATE selection changes failed to disrupt Timboon Gold as it scored its fourth win of the Western District Bowls Division season on Saturday.

The side, which defeated Warrnambool Blue 63-45, entered the contest without two of its more experienced players in Peter Baker and Mick Gaut.

The pair, who play in the same rink, were originally selected for the encounter but pulled out during the week.

Geoff Bedggood, who moved to skipper to cover Gaut’s absence, said the changes had the potential to impact the side ahead of the match-up.

However, he said the selection panel opted to keep Shayne Pudney’s and Arthur Finch’s rinks as normal given the pair had been in strong form.

Both Pudney and Finch went on to win their matches, but Bedggood was just pleased with the side’s third rink in the victory.

He said it was pleasing for the club to have Peter Neal and Sandra Trigg step in and acquit themselves well alongside Pam Dwyer as the third rink suffered a narrow defeat under Bedggood’s guidance.

“We didn’t know what would happen with that rink but we didn’t want to change the other two and we ended up winning two out of three rinks,” Bedggood said.

“The rink we ended up changing around only lost by three so I was really happy with that.”

Bedggood said the late selection swing gave the club confidence it had plenty of depth to cover key players.

He said the club was finding it hard to promote division two bowlers but added it was a good problem to have with both sides showing strong form.

Timboon will now have the opportunity to extend its winning streak when it hosts Port Fairy Red this weekend.

Port Fairy is coming off a strong win over Terang Green, but Bedggood said his side would be brimming with confidence ahead of the clash.

“No matter who you come up against if you go in confident you can win it brings the best out of you I reckon,” he said.

“Last year we were grand finalists which has lifted our spirits too and we know we can beat the top sides so there is no holding us back.

“We usually have good games with Port Fairy, we’re both even sides but it’s at home so there is a bit of an advantage there.

“I’m confident we can win.”
