Tough start for Magpies at home
CAMPERDOWN had a tough start to the Hampden league senior football competition on Saturday, going down to Terang Mortlake by 73 points.
The match was played under lights at the Leura Oval, with a full slate of games in the ‘Super Saturday’ fixture.
The Magpies kicked three goals to one in the first quarter before being held goalless for the rest of the game in the 13.18.96 to 3.5.23 loss.
“We had the start and not a lot else unfortunately,” Camperdown coach Clinton Thomas said.
“But full credit to Terang Mortlake, they’re a good unit, they looked a lot more like the team from 2024 than the team from last year, they played a great game and deserved to win.”
Camperdown unveiled three debutantes in the game in junior player Paddy Hassett, returning player Darcy Vick, and recruit Bailey Thompson.
“With the limited opportunities that he had, Paddy certainly competed hard and that’s all you can really ask of him at this stage.
“He’s one of these kids that has earned the opportunity, he’s put in a lot of hard yards behind the scenes to be considered for the seniors.”
Thompson was listed as one of the Magpies best in the loss.
“It’s good having a big fella in there, he’s just a fierce competitor.
“He’s sliding into the midfield relatively well for us in that ruck role and has been a good addition.”
Vick played under 18s in 2024 before having a season off last year.
“Darcy is getting back into the swing of it and learning a few different pieces around game systems and whatnot, but he’ll do some good things this year.”
Tom Baker, returning after a season at Barwon Heads, kicked two of the Magpies three first quarter goals and was named as Camperdown’s best.
“Tommy’s an electric sort of character, you know when he gets his hands on the footy that something’s generally going to happen.
“He competed well up forward for us, where we struggled to really make too much of an impact on the scoreboard, but he certainly contributed where he could.”
In tomorrow’s game, Camperdown play Hamilton at Hamilton’s Melville Oval.
“They (Hamilton) are up and about, they went down a very, very close game to Koroit, so they’ll be brimming with a fair bit of confidence at the moment.
“On their home deck, they’ll be a tough team to beat.”
The reserves match saw Terang Mortlake score an 8.9.57 to 7.4.46 win.
Hugh Gordon, Nick Jones and Scott Londregan were Camperdown’s best, with Jones kicking four goals.
Terang Mortlake had a 50 point win in the under 18s, 8.16.64 to 1.8.14.
Ned Molan, Rory Cameron and Isaac Cootesmith were best for the under 18 Magpies, with Cameron kicking the lone goal.
Camperdown got the win in the under 16s, 9.6.60 to 3.4.22.
Joshua Finlayson, Jonty Raven and Max Rees were best for Camperdown in the win, with Finlayson and Isaac Lawlor kicking three goals each.
Camperdown also got the points in the under 14 football, 6.8.44 to 3.2.20.
Darby Sinnott kicked three goals and was named as best along with Bailey Carman, Parker Lockhart and Syd Walsh.
The Magpies had a 35 point win in the under 12 football, 7.8.50 to 2.3.15.
Jack Hillman and William Sinnott kicked two goals each, with best players being Jay Finlayson, Sailor Hargreaves and Jamie Gardiner.

In the Open netball, Terang Mortlake got the points with a 42-40 win.
The Bloods got off to strong start with a 12-5 lead at quarter time.
After being eight goals down at half time, the Magpies outscored Terang Mortlake 23-17 in the second half to just fall short.
“We had a slow start, and you just really can’t give a team a lead like that when the weather’s like it was because you just can’t play to that fast pace that you need to get the score back in line,” Camperdown coach Jill Leader said.
“We were close in the second quarter, the second half we won, it was just that one quarter and one of those days where the weather really impacted our ability to come back.”
The Magpies handed open debuts to Eliza Fleming and Madison Lucas.
Fleming, promoted from division one, was named in Camperdown’s best.
“Eliza had a great game, she played really well.
“She played wing defence, she did everything that she needed to do and slowed their attacking down a bit and had a good crack at a few balls.”
Current under 17 player Lucas also showed plenty in her open debut.
“Madi’s just going to get better and better every game.
“It was hard because of the weather conditions, she’s quite a fast aerial player, it was a bit difficult to play her style, but I was really happy with the way Madi played she’s just going to get stronger game by game.”
Sophie Conheady and Indi Cameron were Camperdown’s best in the loss.
“Sophie and Indy both played really well, they steadied the ship when we needed it to be steadied.”
Both players played a big role in Camperdown’s second half comeback.
“In the last half where the game got pretty physical, Indi was able to hold her own in a physical game, was able to take the ball and feed our goalers really steadily.
“Sophie came out of wing attack, she started there then played goal attack and opened up our goal circle nicely for Nell (Mitchell) to score, so she played a really pivotal role in our comeback as well.”
Nell Mitchell led Camperdown’s scorers with 22 goals, with junior player Kiara Love, filling in for the absent Piper Stephens, shooting 11 goals.
The division one netball went the way of Terang Mortlake who had a 38-25 win.
Jocelyn McDonald, Macy Mahony and Chloe O’Brien were best for Camperdown, with Isobel Marwood shooting 20 goals.
The division two game saw Terang Mortlake score a 30-28 win.
Grace Dawson shot 16 goals in the narrow loss, with Airlee Cole, Kate Hallyburton and Hope Kerr best.
The Bloods made it a clean sweep of the senior netball with a 21-20 victory in division three.
Best for Camperdown were Poppy Kerr, Emily Helmore and Lauren Murphy.
Terang Mortlake had a 42-18 win in the 17 and under netball.
Kiara Love shot 17 of Camperdown’s 18 goals, with Maisie Molan, Sasha Kerr and Charlotte Hinds named as best.
The 17 and under reserves saw a 34-18 win to Terang Mortlake.
Matea McKenzie, Charli Lee and Addison Simmonds were best for Camperdown.
The 15 and under game saw Camperdown score a 40-20 win.
Olive Wills, Taylor Cameron and Violet McDowall were best for the Magpies, with Cameron shooting 24 goals.
In the 15 and under reserves netball, Terang Mortlake had a 26-18 win.
Best for Camperdown were Reagan Webb, Zhai Lyons and Vogue Fleming, with Ruby Johnstone shooting 12 goals.
The 13 and under game saw a 27-19 win to the Bloods.
Zoe Unwin, Marlee Fitzgerald and Bella Brebner were Camperdown’s best.
Terang Mortlake’s 13 and under reserves team registered a 27-15 win.
For the junior Magpies, Poppy Gaut scored 10 goals, with Holly Anne Brooks, Emilia Narik and Pippa Woodmason named as best.
