The local Dojo sent a team of nine to round two of the tournament, held in Doncaster last weekend.

The event attracted a record 220 competitors from across Victoria who were keen to showcase their skills in kata, kumite, continuous sparring, traditional weapons and creative weapons.

Round two was a true celebration of martial arts excellence according to sensei Peter Conroy.

“It was so encouraging to see the next generation of champions emerge,” he said.

“We were especially thrilled to see Kyla Bailey debut in our tournament squad, which was a significant milestone and a testament to her commitment to the way of karate.

“Watching students like Klya step onto the mats for the first time and give their all is what this journey is all about. Our seniors continue to set the standard but it is clear our future is in strong, capable hands.”

Funakoshi member Jill Cole brought home first place in the veteran 51+ points sparring category and finished second in the veteran 51+ kata (male and female combined) and advanced continuous sparring.

She also finished third in both the veteran 40+ continuous sparring and the Open black belt point sparring.

“We thank the NAS organisers for another well-run event and extend our respect to all martial artists who stood tall and gave their best today,” Peter said.

“Our focus now turns to continued training and preparation for the upcoming rounds.”
