Towns gather for an annual breakfast treat
VOLUNTEERS in Terang and Mortlake were busy serving up hundreds of pancakes to the community on Tuesday.

The day marked Shrove Tuesday, also commonly known as Pancake Day, which is a traditional day marking the end of the pre-Lent period on the church calendar prior to Lent beginning on Ash Wednesday.
In Mortlake, members of the Uniting Church volunteered to use the day as an opportunity to connect with the wider community, serving up a pancake feast for all to enjoy.
Mortlake Uniting Church fellowship president Heather Rowe said members had enjoyed a busy morning.
“We’ve had a fantastic day,” she said.
“Aberlea supported us really well – I think every resident enjoyed a pancake breakfast, with some coming to the Uniting Church hall while others had pancakes delivered.
“The staff took a whole pile back – so it was a fantastic start to Pancake Day.
“We’ve had a great day.”
All proceeds raised through the fundraiser are donated to the Uniting Church Winter Share Appeal, which provides support to those who have fallen on hard times.
Mrs Rowe thanked the volunteers for their dedicated work, with one team manning the barbecue outside and the other busily manning the hot plates in the kitchen.
“We had over 60 pancakes delivered down the street and well over a hundred old in the hall, with a few hours left before closing,” she said.

“Well in excess of 200 pancakes are made on the day.
“But we like to connect with people so it’s a welcome rush.
“We have chat with people when they come in and we do quite a bit for the community, so it’s good to see everyone.”
During the same morning in Terang, St Thomas’ Primary School hosted its annual Big Breakfast fundraiser.
Hundreds made their way to the school to enjoy great food and company, with all funds raised going straight back to the students.
“It was really successful,” volunteer Cassie Greaves said.
“We haven’t counted all the figures yet but the amount of people we had come through the doors was phenomenal.
“We pretty much sold out of all the food.
“The Big Breakfast is nearly getting back to pre-COVID levels, which is really good.”
Mrs Greaves thanked all the businesses who had donated to ensure the day was a success, including Terang Country Bakery donating 30 litres of pancake batter, The Shed donating bacon and eggs, Greavesys Fruit n Veg donating fresh fruit and juice, Kolora Noorat Football Netball Club donating equipment to make life easier for the volunteers, Abbey Lane Linen and Gifts donating a $300 hamper to be raffled and Piccolo Coffee for donating 50 cents from every coffee sold straight back to the school.
