Moving up: Residents of Derrinallum were fascinated by the installation of a detached extension in to a backyard last Friday.

The crane was lifting a relocatable home into the backyard of Kim Haigh, who has spent over a year preparing the land to introduce a detached extension to her home.

The relocatable home was built by Rentschs in Warrnambool, who built the home on site before delivery.

The unit includes benches, carpet, lino flooring and light fixtures, and has been cleaned prior to moving.

Ms Haigh said she was happy to see the process come to an end last Friday, with her mother Anne Holt due to move in once the unit has been wired up and furnished.

“My mum’s 87 years old, and her house was too big for her,” she said.

“We didn’t want to put her in a home – she’s not ready for that sort of thing – so we put the extension on the back so she can live with us but not in our house.

“It’s pretty exciting – we’re lucky we’ve got a huge block, so it goes back a long way.

“It does look a bit cramped, but it’s no different to a normal extension going on.

“This house is so small – it’s the original four-room cottage.”

A number of residents watched from the footpath, while some also watched from their cars or from businesses as the unit was installed.
