Walking in honour of women
RESIDENTS are invited to take a walk for an important cause next Friday as part of International Women’s Day activities.
GRIT Legal and Excuse Me Katie’s will once again encourage residents to walk in honour of women killed by male violence.
Organiser Zoe Wilkinson said this year’s walk would begin from 5.30pm at Excuse Me Katie’s, 243 Manifold Street, to better accommodate participation.
“I thought an evening event might be more accessible for more people,” she said.
“Last year we held it in the morning and I think it’s a bit more difficult for people to attend having work and school in the morning.
“I thought a Friday evening might make it more open to more people.
“This year we’re going to have a guest speaker to provide some information and awareness about family violence.
“I thought it would add something really informative and practical to the event as well.”
The walk will go from Excuse Me Katie’s to the Camperdown Clocktower, where a short ceremony will take place before returning to the café at 6pm for a family violence information session.
The guest speaker will be Emma House chief executive officer Kerriann Campbell Jones.
“The walk is completely free – anyone is welcome to join – and anyone who wants to join the session can purchase a $10 ticket which includes a complimentary drink,” Ms Wilkinson said.
“All proceeds from that will be donated to our local frontline family violence aid organisation Rize Up.
“There will also be a raffle at the information session, with prizes from local business.
“We’d really like to get more young people there this year – under 18s have free entry to the information session.
“We encourage secondary school-aged boys and girls to join us and learn a bit more about family violence and gain awareness and education.”
Rize Up is a community-driven organisation working to support families affected by domestic and family violence through raising awareness and various support programs.
Tickets for the information session will be available at the door, with a raffle also held on the night for $2 each or three for $5.
