LOCAL bowls competition, the Western District Playing Area (WDPA) is hoping for a November 6 start as COVID restrictions delay seasons across the state.

WDPA pennant committee member Barry Bowen said a meeting last week saw the area confirm its plans, adding they were still subject to State Government restrictions and Bowls Victoria advice.

Under the plan, Saturday pennant would start on the first Saturday in November, while mid week pennant would start on the second Tuesday if restrictions allow.

The opening two rounds, previously proposed on the original fixture, will be voided, with officials hoping to play a minimum of 12 matches this season.

The fixture will not be adjusted, except for the removal of rounds one and two, with clubs to instead play those opponents in rounds 10 and 11.

The playing area had previously locked in start dates of October 19 for midweek pennant and October 23 for Saturday pennant.

“We’ve decided to abandon the first two rounds of Saturday pennant and Tuesday (midweek) pennant,” Bowen said.

“The third round of midweek will be played on Tuesday, December 21.

“We are hoping to do that (start on November 6) but as everyone knows things can change quickly.

“At this stage, it’s what is proposed.”

Bowen said the playing area had also yet to make a decision on what would happen to round three of Saturday pennant if the November 6 start date was pushed back.

“Another meeting would be needed before a decision is made but we might be able to fit it in,” he said.

“Looking at the calendar with all the district events there is not a lot of spare room.”
